Sports Funding for Schools

We have welcomed the Government’s announcement in June 2013 to provide additional funding until 2020 to improve the quality provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. We are committed to using this resource in developing high quality PE lessons, alongside greater opportunities for sporting competitions and clubs for our young people.

This funding goes directly to primary school head teachers so it can be decided how best to use it in providing sporting activities for pupils.

This means:

· A lump sum for each school, with a per-pupil top-up. A typical primary school with 250 primary aged pupils would receive £9,250 per year.

· ‘Ring-fenced’ funding - only to be spent on sport - will go directly into the hands of heads and teachers who will decide what is best for their children’s needs.

· Tougher assessment of sport provision via Ofsted to ensure the funding is bringing the maximum benefit for all pupils, with schools held to account for how they spend the money.

Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:

· Hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons.

· Support and involve the least active children by running after school sports clubs and holiday clubs, such as the Change4Life clubs.

· Provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers. · Run sports competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games.

· Run sports activities with other schools.
